Russell Township Council recognized eight outstanding residents at its Monday, September 22 meeting, presenting Community Awards for their exceptional contributions to the community.
Shauna Wanamaker received the Community Award for Environment in recognition of her leadership in biodiversity and pollinator protection. Inspired by the decline of monarch butterflies and other pollinators, she transformed her yard into a pollinator-friendly space after completing the David Suzuki ButterflyWay training in 2021.
She went on to launch ButterflyWay Prescott-Russell, mobilizing residents across the region to protect pollinators and restore biodiversity. Under her leadership, the initiative has distributed more than 2,000 native seed packages, shared 3,000 native plants, delivered educational programs to 10 schools, and helped create more than 45 pollinator gardens. Six new ButterflyWay Rangers have also joined the project, amplifying its impact.
In addition to this regional initiative, Wanamaker has contributed locally through the Russell & District Horticultural Society, Eco East, and Russell Township’s Environmental and Sustainability Advisory Committee. Her work demonstrates how one person’s passion can inspire lasting environmental change.
“Shauna’s journey mirrors that of the monarch butterfly she works hard to protect, requiring extraordinary energy, perseverance, and vision,” said Russell Mayor Mike Tarnowski. “She represents the very best of community leadership, confronting challenges with practical actions, education, and collaboration.”

Community Service and Volunteerism: Russell Trivia Team
Seven long-time members of Russell Trivia: Billy Cashman, Donna Lafrance, Paul Deveau, Larissa de Quimper, Melanie Burns, Stephanie Knight, and Travis Laramee were honoured with Community Awards for Community Service and Volunteerism.
The group has been working together for more than a decade as part of the Russell Trivia team, which has raised nearly $1 million for residents and community causes over its 22-year history. Initially launched to support individuals in need, the event has grown into a cherished local tradition that also supports regional service groups.
Each volunteer plays a vital role in the success of the trivia evenings, from managing registrations and finances to decorating, auctioneering, documenting events, and providing music and lighting. Their collective dedication ensures the event remains both entertaining and impactful, directly benefiting those who need it most.
“(The Community Awards for Community Service and Volunteerism) is a small token of gratitude for your significant contributions,” said Mayor Tarnowski. “You remind us that incredible things can happen when people come together with purpose and heart. Thank you for your service, your community spirit, and your commitment to our community.”
A Celebration of Community Spirit
This year’s Community Awards highlight the heart of Russell Township: residents who invest their time, skills, and energy into making the community stronger. Whether through grassroots environmental leadership or decades of volunteer service, these eight recipients embody the spirit of collaboration and care that defines the township.
