Two men charged after Russell OPP recover $100,000 in stolen property

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say a theft investigation has led to the recovery of about $100,000 worth of stolen property and charges against two men.

The East Region Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), working with the Russell County detachment, launched the investigation after officers responded to a call on Nov. 19, 2024, about a theft from a residential construction site in Russell. Two furnaces had been reported stolen from the site.

Investigators from the Russell County OPP sought assistance from the CSCU, which handles property crime cases. On Jan. 14, 2025, members of the CSCU executed a search warrant at a residence in Cornwall, where they recovered stolen goods, including one of the furnaces taken from the Russell site.

Antoine Campagna, of South Glengarry, Ont., and Joseph Campagna, of Cornwall, Ont., have each been charged under the Criminal Code with two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and two counts of trafficking in stolen goods under $5,000.

Both men are scheduled to appear in court in Cornwall on Feb. 20, 2025.

Police are still looking to identify the owners of several recovered items, including a King Canada generator, a Porter Cable air compressor, a York air conditioner, an Environsense hot water tank, and 25 boxes of Mainstays engineered flooring.

The OPP said similar thefts have been reported in nearby regions, including the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry, as well as the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. Investigators believe some of the recovered property may belong to victims in these areas.

Anyone who believes the recovered items may belong to them is urged to contact the Russell County OPP detachment and reference occurrence number E241540010.
