Members of the Russell County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged 40 drivers with stunt driving since Monday, May 1.

According to police, officers continue to conduct targeted enforcement in response to ongoing concerns about excessive speeding and dangerous driving behaviours throughout the detachment area.

The OPP says stunt driving remains a significant road safety concern, placing motorists, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users at risk.

Among the most notable offences recorded in recent weeks were drivers travelling at 191 km/h and 179 km/h in a 110 km/h zone. Police also stopped motorists travelling at 120 km/h and 110 km/h in areas with a posted speed limit of 60 km/h.

In another case, officers recorded a vehicle travelling at 91 km/h in a 40 km/h school zone during school hours.

Drivers charged with stunt driving face immediate penalties under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, including a 30-day roadside driver’s licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.

Upon conviction, offenders face a minimum fine of $2,000, which can increase significantly depending on the circumstances. Additional penalties may include demerit points, further fines, and possible licence suspension.

The Russell County OPP says it remains committed to keeping roads safe and will continue proactive enforcement initiatives across the region.

Anyone with information regarding stunt driving is encouraged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.
