Russell Township Mayor reflects on AMO Annual Conference

Russell Township Mayor Mike Tarnowski described the 2025 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Annual Conference as both productive and constructive, highlighting the importance of collaboration and long-term planning for the benefit of residents.

“AMO reinforced that our biggest wins happen when we work together,” said Tarnowski. “Russell Township is leaning into collaboration—with our neighbouring municipalities, the province, the federal government, and community partners—to turn shared priorities into results for our residents.”

Throughout the conference, Tarnowski concentrated on several themes relevant to Russell Township’s future growth and sustainability. He began with the planning for growth and asset management and integrating demographic shifts into long-term asset and capital planning. Next, he brought up non-tax revenues and asset optimization and leveraging partnerships and naming rights to maximize municipal assets, particularly the new Recreation Complex. Tarnowski also spoke about the small urban priorities and regional connectivity, and examining potential regional impacts of major transportation initiatives. Lastly, he brought up the energy planning and local economies and linking provincial electricity planning to local community growth and economic development.

Tarnowski also met with regional mayors to discuss shared local issues. Conversations included opportunities for practical cross-municipal collaborations such as shared services, joint approaches to infrastructure development, and coordinated advocacy efforts.

Reflection on Provincial Remarks

The mayor noted he was encouraged by Premier Doug Ford’s remarks at the conference, particularly the emphasis on cooperation and economic resilience in light of ongoing U.S. tariff pressures.

“We’re committed to fiscal accountability—planning for the long term, living within our means, and making every dollar work harder for residents,” Tarnowski added. “Sustainable services and infrastructure come from prudent choices today.”
