{"id":28468,"date":"2023-03-08T16:05:57","date_gmt":"2023-03-08T21:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/editionap.ca\/?p=28468"},"modified":"2025-12-22T13:43:41","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T12:43:41","slug":"cmha-urges-people-to-avoid-stigmatizing-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/refletnews.ca\/en\/societe\/cmha-urges-people-to-avoid-stigmatizing-language\/","title":{"rendered":"CMHA urges people to avoid stigmatizing language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of Mental Health Awareness Month in March, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) has sent a release to bring awareness to the stigma surrounding mental health in local communities. All too often, they say, people are defined by their illness rather than who they are as individuals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial stigma and discrimination can compound problems and make recovery more difficult for people living with mental illness,\u201d the CMHA said in the release. \u201cSo, what can we do to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness? One great way is to start by changing the language we use when we talk about mental health issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rather than using negative or stigmatizing phrases such as \u201cthis drives me crazy\u201d, \u201cthis is stupid\u201d, or \u201cthis person has a mental illness\u201d, the CMHA encourages people to use neutral phrasing such as \u201cthis is annoying\u201d, \u201cthis is strange\u201d, and \u201cthis person is living with a mental illness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Stigmatizing language can have detrimental effects on people, such as inspiring feelings of shame and hopelessness, making people reluctant to seek help or treatment, or making people believe they can never overcome their illnesses.
