The Nation\u00a0Municipality\u00a0has\u00a0officially adopted its 2026 operating budget, following adjustments tied to a significant reduction in Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) costs and the completion of the formal budget process under provincial legislation.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During their latest council meeting on Monday, January 26, Council\u00a0presented the proposed\u00a0original\u00a02026 budget during a regular meeting held on Novembre\u00a010, 2025. In the weeks that followed, council members reviewed the proposal and adopted two amendments at regular meetings on Novembre\u00a024 and\u00a0Decembre\u00a08, 2025.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A key change to the budget occurred after the municipality received its final OPP billing on Decembre\u00a05, 2025. The invoice showed a reduction of $211,119 compared to the amount originally included in the proposed budget.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the Decembre\u00a08 council meeting, members verbally agreed with the mayor\u2019s recommendation to revise the budget to reflect the updated policing costs. The approved adjustments included\u00a0eliminating\u00a0a previously planned $48,300 withdrawal from municipal reserves, transferring $62,819 into reserves, and applying the remaining $100,000 to reduce the overall budget requirement.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result of these changes, the municipality\u2019s total contribution to reserves now stands at $111,119.\u00a0The revised figures also reduced the required tax levy increase to $741,820,\u00a0representing\u00a0a 4.6 per cent increase for 2026.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To formalize the changes, the mayor issued Mayoral Decision MDE-2025-14 on Decembre\u00a08,\u00a02025,\u00a0ratifying the adjustments related to the final OPP billing. The decision was circulated to council members and made publicly available by Decembre\u00a09, 2025.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The mayor also issued Mayoral Decision MDE-2025-15, shortening the veto period for council\u2019s budget amendments from the standard 10 days to one day. This change moved the end of the veto period from Decembre\u00a020 to Decembre\u00a011, 2025, allowing the budget process to\u00a0proceed\u00a0more quickly.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With all steps completed\u00a0in accordance with\u00a0Section 7 of Ontario Regulation, the 2026 budget was\u00a0deemed\u00a0adopted on Decembre\u00a012, 2025.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Council has now formally recognized that the mayor\u2019s proposed 2026 budget,\u00a0incorporating the two council-adopted amendments and the OPP billing adjustment,\u00a0is adopted.
