Last Saturday, September 14, this year\u2019s five winners were announced at the Autumn in the Country Arts Festival for the 2024 Photo Expo.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFirst Skate, Not the Last\u201d by Hannah Mitchell won Portrait, \u201cThe Bridge\u201d by Amelia Tamas won Landscape, \u201cHidden Boots\u201d by Laura Lichty won Best Overall, \u201cBalance\u201d by Elizabeth Bahl-S\u00e9guin won Best Youth, and \u201cHello There\u201d by Paula Brown won the newly added category, Jury\u2019s Choice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The theme \u201cBest Kept Secret\u201d made participants photograph what they believe is a unique or special place within the Russell Township boundaries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I took it (the picture) I was thinking more to put this the Canadian Wildlife Federation competition. But then I thought \u2018Well, that\u2019s where it was taken and it falls in the category.\u2019,\u201d said Paula Brown, winner of the newly added category for this year\u2019s Photo Expo. She explained that her photo had been a pure coincidence. She was sitting on a bench near the parking lot at Russell\u2019s City Hall while waiting for her husband to return. Brown looked up and saw a turkey walking between cars.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou see his eye? He\u2019s on guard. This is not where he\u2019s supposed to be. And he wasn\u2019t there long.\u201d But the bird was there long enough for Brown to get close and snap the winner of the Jury\u2019s Choice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The winners received a $400 Canadian Artists\u2019 Representation<\/span> le front des artistes canadiens <\/span><\/i>fees as well as their photos will be displayed at the recreational trail located at the start of the trail at 901 Notre-Dame Street in Embrun. The photos will be alongside the eight previous winners of the 2023 and 2022 Photo Expo.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside the five winners, the jury nominated seven photos to showcase as honourable mentions. \u201cJoy\u201d by Christine Mentzel, \u201cFlock of Birds in the Early Fall at Sunset\u201d by Denis Tanguay, \u201cHard at Work for Us\u201d by Ella Moore Charland, \u201cCotton Candy Skies\u201d by Emma Pineo, \u201cOwl on the Hunt\u201d by Mark Hatherall, \u201cRussell Museum Barber Shop\u201d by Roland Piette, and \u201cFollow Me to the Castor\u201d by Tim Bolton-Gowling.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The jury committee contained Myriam Cobb, Curator for Global Affairs Canada Visual Art Collection, John Healey, Artist and Instructor at the School of Photographic Arts: Ottawa (SPAO), and Lynda Clouette-Mackay, Curator for Centre Culturel Le Chenail.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All 12 photos presented received a subscription to PhotoEd Magazine.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The prize \u201cCrowd Favourite\u201d was added to the expo with the aim to increase public participation. \u201cBlue Heron\u201d by Norm Fortin won the prize and a $50 gift card to <\/span>Euphie d\u2019ic<\/span><\/i>i.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With over double the number of submissions the expo saw last year, only over 100 of the 215 submitted photos were presented at the event.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
