Russell Township Council recognized longtime volunteer and sports advocate Dave Dyer with a Citizen Recognition Award for his significant contributions to the community. The award was presented during a council meeting, highlighting Dyer’s decades of dedication to local sports and volunteer initiatives.
“Mr. Dave Dyer is a cornerstone of the village of Russell and an inspiration to us all,” said Russell Mayor Mike Tarnowski during the council meeting. “We honour his incredible contributions to our community with this well-deserved award.”
Dyer has been instrumental in the development of sports in Russell. He played a key role in establishing the township’s first public tennis court facility and was a driving force behind the installation of outdoor lighting at the community’s baseball diamonds and soccer fields.
One of his most impactful contributions has been to the Russell Soccer Club. Since its inception, the club has grown from just 50 youth participants to over 1,700 young athletes. Over the years, Dyer has served in various roles, including player, coach, board member, and president, leaving a lasting legacy in local sports.
“Where Dave’s impact is perhaps most widely felt is in soccer,” added Mayor Tarnowski. “He has been, and continues to be, the heart and soul of Russell’s soccer movement.”
Beyond athletics, Dyer has been a dedicated volunteer for over 40 years. He was a key organizer of Russell’s 125th-anniversary celebrations, spearheaded the Light Up the Village initiative, and played a major role in installing Christmas lights in MacDougall Park. His passion for sports also earned him a place in the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame in 2023.
“Dave has always worked with one goal in mind: to make Russell a better place for all,” said Mayor Tarnowski.
The council and community expressed their gratitude for his ongoing efforts in improving Russell.
