A local entrepreneur was celebrated for his initiative and community impact during a recent council meeting in the Township of Russell.
Mayor Mike Tarnowski highlighted the achievements of Michael Smith, who has been growing his popcorn venture, Barry’s Poppins, into a successful small business that keeps him actively engaged in the community.
The 22-year-old’s business recently received additional support from Ability Hive, a local organization focused on empowering individuals through inclusive opportunities. Co-founders Josée and Kim, who were present at the ceremony, helped elevate the business by providing professional signage and promotional materials for the popcorn stand.
The recognition ceremony brought together Smith’s support network, including family members, friends, and co-workers from Valoris, underscoring the collaborative effort behind his success.

During the council meeting held on March 23, Tarnowski presented Smith with an official Township certificate and a commemorative medallion in recognition of his accomplishments and entrepreneurial spirit.
“And did I mention how good that popcorn was?” wrote Mayor Tarnowski on his Facebook post.
The initiative also reflects the broader impact of community partnerships. In a separate statement, Ability Hive noted that its support of Smith’s business is part of a larger giving effort.
“This donation is a special one, marking a major milestone for us as we’ve now surpassed $10,000 given back through our 2% of all sales donated promise!” the organization shared on social media.
The recognition of Michael Smith highlights the Township of Russell’s ongoing commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs and fostering inclusive economic opportunities within the community.
